Pippa's Penguin Use the patterns to make penguins in blue, yellow, red, brown, purple orange, green, gray and black with white polka dots. Pause to let the kids fill in the penguin's color and encourage them to say "They're black and white" with you.
Pippa went with her Nana to the zoo. They saw elephants, lions and kangaroos. Pippa watched the peacocks and the monkeys. But her favorite animals were the penguins. She loved the way they waddled and swam and slid on their tummies. On the way home, Nana said, “Pippa, would you like a penguin?” “Yes, please,” said Pippa. “I think I have some scrap material that I could use to make you one,” said Nana. When they got to Nana’s house, she got out a large scrap bag. “How about a penguin made from this?” asked Nana. (put up blue penguin) “Nana, that’s silly!” said Pippa. “Penguins aren’t... blue. They’re black and white.” Nana dug deeper into the scrap bag. “Here’s your favorite color.” (put up yellow penguin) “Oh, Nana, penguins aren’t... yellow. They’re black and white.” Nana dug even deeper into the scrap bag. “You know this is just a pretend penguin. So how about a brightly colored one?” (put up red penguin) “Penguins aren’t... red. They’re black and white.” Nana dug into the very bottom of the scrap bag. “This might work,” said Nana. “It would if you were making a monkey,” said Pippa, “But penguins aren’t... brown. They’re black and white.” (put up brown penguin) Nana scratched her head, then said, “I think I have some more scrap material in a closet. She and Pippa headed there. “Here’s the material left over from your favorite dress,” said Nana. (put up purple penguin) “Nana, that’s silly!” said Pippa. “Penguins aren’t... purple. They’re black and white.” Nana dug deeper into the closet. “I don’t suppose you’d want an... orange or... green penguin.” (put up orange and green penguins) “Penguins aren’t orange or green. They’re black and white.” Nana dug into the very bottom of the closet. “This might work,” said Nana. (put up gray penguin) “It would if you were making an elephant. But penguins aren’t... gray.” Pippa paused. “Well, the ones I like aren’t. The ones I like are black and white.” Nana smiled at Pippa. “I’ll keep looking. Surely I have some black and white material somewhere.” The next Saturday Pippa came over to Nana’s house. “Close your eyes. I have a surprise,” said Nana. “Is it black and white?” asked Pippa. “Yes,” said Nana. Pippa felt something in her hands. She opened her eyes. (put up polka-dotted penguin) “Oh, Nana, you’re silly!” said Pippa. “But I love you and I love my polka-dotted penguin.”
